Guess what? Tomorrow is The Dandy's 70th birthday. And you know what that means? Yes, media coverage! I decided to create this thread so we could discuss and compare stories about the special day in the news. Well, that is, if you want to. We could always start rambling and go off on a tangent, which is what usually happens.
Today, there was a story on The Dandy and Beano in the Extra section of today's Independent. Pretty basic history: genesis, WWII, regulars such as Dennis and Minnie being introduced and so forth. What was special is that it was a humorous four page comic strip which felt extremely out of place with the paper's usual tone (Have you ever READ The Independent? So pessimistic and dreary. The front page is ALWAYS about global warming.) If you're interested, you'll easily pick up a free copy tomorrow from the library or from the dustbins behind the chippy...like how I got hold of my copy! The grease made it a bit hard to read though and the ink made it taste icky.
Then again, Derek didn't make an appearance at all so you may as well not bother. I mean, what's the point of chronicling the history of The Beano and Dandy if you don't mention the most popular character of all (after Dennis)?

I'll have to try and get a copy of the independent. Any ideas who the artist of the strip was? Well, i must say, The Dandy's dropped very low these days...remember when it was a COMIC? With MORE THAN 16 PAGES OF STRIPS? It seems so long ago. Well, 'appy 70th to it anyway.
And, seeing as Derek is his own character, he probably won't get many mentions, unfortunately. He isn't really considered a full Beano character. Just a special guest. A guest who's more popular than most of the Beano owned content.

Why am I not surprised? No idea who the artist was. The style was pretty generic to me so it definitely wasn't Karl Dixon, Wayne Thompson or Nigel Parkinson. I don't read the comics anymore but it might have been one of Dennis' artists. Ah, those were the days, before shallow consumerism took over entirely. I fear D. C. Thomson & Co. Ltd weren't making enough profit and needed to make ends meet in any way they could...which meant more reprints, less artists employed and more adverts. Why can't people see there's just as much fun, if not more so, in a ball of wool than in the latest robot-shark-transforming-car-electronic-toy-type-thing? On a more positive note, did anyone hear a few months ago that they're making a new Dennis the Menace cartoon series? Neat, always enjoyed the late '90s run. Now all we need is a Derek the Sheep cartoon show! Perhaps Shaun needs another guest star. You could go as Norbet le Mouton!

Sorry Hmm...Barry Appleby perhaps? And comics only really change if they go under 20,000 sales. Which the Dandy did. Twice. D. C. Thomson & Co. Ltd need to bring back some of the old publications, maybe? And, no, i can't say i did o.o Sounds great! Bring back the puppet version! Please! XD A Derek show would be awesome, but they'd need to try and make sure they keep Mr. Northfield's style in there.

Hmm, well that landmark seemed to pass by pretty uneventfully. I never heard it mentioned at all, all day long. I only know about it now because of reading this post. Even Newsround didn't mention anything and they do when its something like this with the Beano.

Well, I'd love to tell you some things, but I can't. Let's just say there are some people working very hard to make your dreams come true.
And as for the Dandy, I'll drop the hint that there's some artwork on the way there this very morn' ...

And wasn't the artist Ken Harrison? I'm sure he signed it.

Ken Harrison (Robbie Rebel) drew it.

Ken Harrison does a lot of promotional work for the Dandy now, really. He did that illustration in the book of world records last year, along with several others.
Actually, a little off topic, but does anyone know why he quit drawing The Broons and Oor Wullie?

Yeah, the Dandy; look out for "Pinky's Crackpot Circus" hopefully turning up in February. Lovely drawings, that's all I'm saying ...

So, did you buy it? What did you think? I liked Jamie's Desperate Dan, Lucy Grimm and Nigel P's Puss 'n' Boots. Nice mix of styles; quite European looking I thought.
