I was thinking it would be nice to have a Derek the Sheep-wiki where we could have an online encyclopedia about me and my pals and the world I live in. What do you reckon? Everyone can contribute and expand on it too and we'd have pictures and everything. It would include all my Beano stories plus diary stories and characters. Could be a laugh/could be a nightmare. Thoughts?

i'd say definately.
i'm not happy with wiki at the moment, though.
it'd take a lot of prep....

I'm hoping there's easy to use online ones. I've had a quick look and I think there are.

But Pigface isn't famous...you're warned about that before writing (something like "If it isn't something that most people would take interest in, don't write it).
As for Derekpedia, I'm in!!

Yeah it has to be "popular culture" I think. But like Derek says you can have personal wiki sites. ModTheSims2 have one.

you're not allowed to write your own stuff on wikipedia either. They're particularly clamping down on webcomics too.

i noticed. it was more annoying to me that they didnt give me notice about deleting the article. They didnt orginally even give me a reason. i had to ask them myself.....

It sounds like a good idea. There's a wiki for homestarrunner.com, you know, so, theoretically, we could have a Derekpedia. There's just some major problems with the idea: - Content: Compared to the universe of Homestar Runner (>260 individual toons and counting), or THIS universe we're in (infinite content) there's not a lot of stuff we could write about you. If we had our own wiki, we'd create twenty articles of you and your characters and get stuck. We'd have a lot of trouble scraping together even 50 articles, let alone 100.
- Hosting costs: There is no such thing as a free lunch in this world. How are we going to pay the bill of $200+ each month? Derek's not made of money!
- Getting new users: Apart from us, who's really going to want to edit some fan-based wiki about some cartoon sheep they've never heard of? The only potential users would be those who are able to read your stories in The Beano. Then there's the problem of spreading the word. I hardly think Mr. Editor wouldn't mind you advertising your wiki/message board/blog in your comic. In fact, I think 90% of your fans don't know this message board exists.
My conclusion: Could be a nightmare. We've already got a fan site and you're reading it right now. Stick to your page on the official wiki instead.

Fair enough - I was thinking of a free one with no money for hosting, or at the most £30 a year. - It's amazing how many characters/stories/places have cropped up when you look into it! - I wasn't expecting many people apart from me plus a couple of others to take part (mainly me) - It was going to be a stupid online Derek encyclopedia and not-at-all serious, but it would have bolstered and consolidated my little world, especially with my little book coming out from Bloomsbury next summer. A sort of "users guide" if you will. And you're right about people not knowing about this messageboard - not many kids are allowed onto the internet as it is. Also I remember when the old ed. gave the blog a big mention in the Beano (with the wig story), and apparently it didn't go down too well with the big bosses

While we're on the subject of wikis, we need to improve Derek's wiki article. The opening paragraphs could be expanded upon and the punctuation and formatting should be seen to. The line about Benny is too casual and there's plenty to write about the rest of characters. Just don't add anything too controversial.

That's a grrreat idea Paws! All work together on it. And some of the other characters too (I wrote Freds Bed but it got deleted, so I re-wrote it and it's still there).
