Oh dear - I see that the plan to welcome new members hasn't quite worked we'd hoped...There's another new member joined and didn't post. What are we doing wrong???

Taking over the threads made for them before they've even had a chance to post in them?

The Problem: Users have to log in/register before they can view the forum. Having to join a forum (which you have no idea what it is like) before you can find out if you'll even enjoy it is not a good selling point.
Consequences: People are put off by the "Log in" screen from joining the forum, or will register, find out they're not interested in the forum and leave.
Solution: Allow people to view the forum without having to log in/register. Although registration may still be required to actually post, this "try before you buy" approach could entice people into joining. A trial could be run for a month or two to see how it goes.

I wish I could do this but it's not possible. It's all or nothing with these forums. I'll open it up for a while to see what happens, but the last time it was open to guests it was overrun by an idiot spammer.
